Mrs Laura McEwan-Hill 4th Dan with Master Amrit Kalcutt, 6th Dan
The Upton & Severn Stoke club is small and friendly with a full range of grades from white belt through to black belt. Junior and adult members train together split by grade into two sessions beginners through to green belt, then a more experienced class of blue belt through to black belt. Training takes place in a fully matted hall and concentrates on fitness, self-defence and teaching the spirit of traditional Tae Kwon-Do whilst giving students valuable lessons in self-control and discipline. Learning a martial art is not always easy so we try to make lessons as fun as possible, and we are a small enough club that we can pay attention to how each student learns best ensuring that we continuously challenge the student.
In addition to traditional Tae Kwon-Do classes, a Kick-Fit class aimed at Adults only is also run by Upton and Severn Stoke club. Kick-Fit is a complete workout class using pads and gloves to kick and punch against, helping to get rid of the stress of a busy day, as well as including less energetic stretching and toning exercises. Class members work to their own level of fitness and so the class is suitable for a wide age and ability range. If you want to have a fun workout with a difference, but feel that you cant commit to learning a full martial art just yet, then Kick-Fit might be a good introduction. The class is also suitable for existing Tae Kwon-Do students who want to supplement their training.
The Instructor at Upton and Severn Stoke club is Mrs Laura McEwan-Hill, 4th Dan. Mrs Hill started training Tae Kwon-Do in 1984 in Bristol with Mr Michael Dew, 7th Dan, and both her 1st & 2nd Dan black belts under Grand Master Cho in 1988 & 1990 respectively. In 1995 Mrs Hill moved to Worcestershire and joined Turners Tae Kwon-Do, an AIMAA affiliated club based in Upton-upon-Severn, taught by Mr Ray Turner, 3rd Dan. This club was attractive since it followed a training ethos and was affiliated to Grand Master Cho, for whom Mrs Hill has always had a great deal of respect and loyalty. From here Mrs Hill was introduced to the WMST network of clubs and in 2006 gained her third Dan under Master Amrit Kalcutt, 6th Dan, and in 2011 Mrs Hill graded under Grand Master Cho to achieve her fourth Dan.
Mrs Hill took over the Upton club as Instructor in January 2009 and brought it into the WMST Association, giving it a full support network and access to other experienced instructors. In 2011 the club needed to find larger premises for the Tae Kwon-Do classes and so moved to a larger hall in Severn Stoke, ten minutes away from Upton. Mrs Hill is a qualified Instructor and Referee, insured with the BTC and is fully DBS checked.
